BY ELIANA JONSHON Ago 24 2026 -------------------- Anti-Jewish hate crimes outnumber anti-Muslim hate crimes about seven to one, according to FBI crime statistics. But the New York Times is offering its readers a different view of the issue, escalating its coverage of supposed anti-Muslim bias to the point that, by some measures, the volume exceeds or roughly equals Times coverage of anti-Jewish bias, the Free Beacon’s Ira Stoll writes. “Critics accuse the Trump administration and supporters of Israel of ‘weaponizing antisemitism,’ a frequently groundless charge that is shorthand for the assertion that the antisemitism complaint is being used to silence criticism of Israel and also as a pretext for an authoritarian crackdown,” Stoll writes. “Yet some of the Times coverage seems to engage in—to borrow a phrase—weaponizing Islamophobia, using the hate label in an attempt to silence criticism of Islamist extremism, of Muslim-dominated countries, or of support for terrorism.” Recent Times headlines that exemplify the pattern include: An August 10 article by Zolan Kanno-Youngs headlined, “Trump Stokes Islamophobia by Calling Democratic Candidates ‘Jihadists.’” An August 11 Times story, “With El-Sayed’s Victory Comes a Wave of Islamophobia.” Even a Times feature on Jewish life at Harvard went off on a tangent to insist that “Other forms of bias, such as Islamophobia, have not received the same level of national attention as antisemitism, but remain a problem.” “For numerically inclined readers, the FBI reports 8,236 hate crimes with anti-Jewish bias in the U.S. over the past 5 years, and 1,170 hate crimes with anti-Islamic or anti-Muslim bias. That’s about 7 times more anti-Jewish hate crimes than anti-Muslim ones,” writes Stoll. “If you search the NYTimes.com archive, over the past year, ‘anti-Jewish’ gives 1,089 results and ‘anti-Muslim’ 1,012 results. Antisemitism yields 1,368 results and Islamophobia 704 results. Islamophobic yields 678 results; antisemitic, 1,202 results. Anti-Catholic gets 826 results in the last year, and Anti-Christian 1,051 results.” READ MORE: The New York Times Is Weaponizing Islamophobia https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!zmUL!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F5485ecf3-6806-437b-8caf-903323423807_2048x1366.jpeg President Donald Trump (Eric Lee/Getty Images) A newly proposed Department of Education rule would require accreditors to assess academic freedom at universities, a move that would effectively make free speech protections a condition for federal student aid, the Free Beacon’s Aaron Sibarium reports. “The rule, which includes carveouts for religious schools, marks the first time that the federal government has attempted to mandate academic freedom through the accreditation process,” writes Sibarium. “It would require accreditors to evaluate whether a school has an academic freedom policy that is ‘applied consistently,’ meaning universities could lose their accreditation status—and thus their eligibility for Pell Grants and federal student loans—if they punish protected speech. While the First Amendment guarantees academic freedom rights at public universities, this rule would extend similar protections to private universities as well.” “Ever since the Trump administration froze billions in grants to top universities and launched a scorched-earth campaign against Harvard, critics have argued that the administration’s hard-nosed tactics encroach on institutional autonomy and threaten academic freedom. The proposed rule flips that criticism on its head, placing new constraints on accreditors and universities in an effort to expand the free speech rights of individual professors. It comes as many campuses are eliminating speech codes amid the White House’s crackdown on higher education, a sign that external pressure can increase academic freedom—or at least certain forms of it—by limiting institutional autonomy.” READ MORE: Trump Admin Moves To Make Academic Freedom a Condition of Accreditation and Federal Aid ///
