California governor Gavin Newsom, a likely 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, “is abandoning his support for Israel now that he thinks it has become politically inconvenient,” the Free Beacon’s Ira Stoll writes. During a March 3 book promotion appearance with “Obama bros” Tommy Vietor and Jon Favreau, Newsom denounced Israel and its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, for dragging America into war. He also said the United States should “reconsider” its military support for Israel. He did not say a single critical word about Iran.

“I mean, [Thomas] Friedman and others are talking about it, appropriately, as sort of an apartheid state,” Newsom said. “You just got to reconsider the whole thing.”

Newsom is nothing if not an oleaginous reader of the political tea leaves willing to transform himself to please his audience. (Just listen to some of his podcasts with right-wing influencers and journalists.) Newsom traveled to Israel on October 20, 2023, and spoke of “the extraordinary people I just met today in Israel” and “the deep connections between my home state and this country.” In 2020, he vetoed a California K-12 ethnic studies mandate amid well-founded concerns from critics, including Jewish groups, that it excluded Jews entirely and included terms like “hxrstory” and “cisheteropatriarchy.”

Stoll writes: “‘My entire life, I felt dumb,’ Newsom said in the appearance. If he felt dumb before, he deserves to feel even dumber now, especially if he thinks Americans won’t see through his self-serving shape-shifting.”
