A university spokesman cited the group’s First Amendment rights. Terror analysts argued otherwise: “This is a symbol of a foreign terrorist organization that’s been designated by the United States,” said Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. The symbol, he added, “absolutely” marks an incitement to violence, which Berkeley’s “Free Speech FAQ” says is not permitted. Berkeley’s defense of its SJP chapter—the virulently anti-Israel group has been banned or suspended on several college campuses, including at UCLA, in some cases for harassment and incitement to violence among other offenses—comes as the Berkeley group posts content glorifying terrorists, including videos of Iranian missile strikes on Israel and statements praising Hamas’s October 7 terror attack and its mastermind, the late Yahya Sinwar. The group also shared a message describing Iranians who oppose their murderous regime as “traitors.” Unlike other schools, UC Berkeley continues to recognize its SJP chapter as an official student organization. While the university says the group operates independently, it received $450 in funding from Berkeley’s student government, which is financed through mandatory student fees.
