After two “ISIS-inspired” men allegedly attempted to target anti-Muslim protesters in New York City with homemade bombs, Democratic officials responded by… condemning Islamophobia, the Free Beacon’s Andrew Stiles writes.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s initial statement on the attempted attack said the protest, organized by the far-right provocateur Jake Lang, who was pardoned for his participation in the Jan. 6 riots, was “rooted in bigotry and racism” and marked “an affront to our city’s values and the unity that defines who we are.” Former New York City comptroller and Democratic congressional candidate Brad Lander said that “displays of Islamophobia will never be tolerated in our city.” (He apologized in a follow-up statement, acknowledging the bombs “were not thrown by the Islamophobic protestors, but by their counter-protesters.”)
New York state senator Liz Krueger said New York City is “no place for anti-Muslim hate or any other kind of prejudice” and blasted “out-of-state provocateurs sowing fear, division, and violence.” It was unclear if she was referring to the protesters or the attackers. New York Immigration Coalition president Murad Awawdeh said the “outlandish” protesters were “looking for people to respond to them in this way.” Their skirts were too short, they shouldn’t have been out so late, and they were asking for it.
“In fairness to the Democrats who rushed to judgment, mainstream reporting on this incident has been characteristically sympathetic to the view that anyone protesting against Islam was asking to be bombed,” Stiles writes. “‘A far-right influencer attracted the counterprotest that turned violent,’ read a New York Times ‘live update’ headline posted on Monday. The paper’s reporting was riddled with passive-voiced descriptions of how ‘smoking jars of metal and fuses’ were thrown by an individual who was ‘one of six people arrested after a clash with anti-Muslim protesters.’”
