Elsewhere:

  • Federal lawmakers from Elise Stefanik to Ted Cruz are calling on Columbia University to take action after the student group Columbia University Apartheid Divest responded to the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by posting “death to America” in Persian. Columbia said that CUAD is not a recognized student group. That’s because CUAD is a coalition of student groups, many of which are recognized by the university. Mahmoud Khalil, whom the Trump administration is seeking to deport, served as a negotiator for CUAD during the 2024 encampment fiasco that culminated in the storming and occupation of a university building.

  • “Operation Epic Fury” will last “four to five weeks,” Trump told the New York Times in a brief phone interview on Sunday.

  • Trump released a video update earlier on Sunday, describing the joint American and Israeli assault on Iran as “one of the largest, most complex, most overwhelming military offensives the world has ever seen.” He celebrated the death of “Iran’s formerly supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei,” a “wretched and vile man … responsible for the slaughter of countless thousands of innocent people.” And he said operations will continue “in full force” to “ensure that Americans will never have to face a radical, bloodthirsty terrorist regime armed with nuclear weapons.”

  • The mullahs go remote: Citing reports from inside Iran, democracy activist Mehdi Yahyanejad said the Iranian regime’s Assembly of Experts is in the process of changing the law that states a new supreme leader must be elected in person “to allow online meeting and online vote.” It could take time to hold a vote over Zoom, as assembly members “are old.”

  • The family of Robert Levinson, the American federal agent who disappeared in Iran while on a mission for the CIA in 2007 and is presumed to have died in Iranian custody, issued a statement on the death of Khamenei: “It is a significant moment for our family and for every family that has suffered at the hands of this regime’s hostage-taking and wrongful detention. We are grateful to President Trump and Secretary Rubio for using the power of the United States to confront Iran and to hold it accountable.”
