A Maryland judge has authorized police to begin evicting residents of the Marylander Condominiums in Prince George’s County, a complex the country has deemed “unfit for human habitation” thanks to vandalism from an adjacent homeless encampment. Judge Bryon Bereano signed a final order this week allowing “all action necessary” to vacate the affected buildings, our Aaron Sibarium reports.

The move puts hundreds of law-abiding residents at risk of homelessness thanks to the illicit activity coming from the sprawling encampment, a haven for gangs, drugs, and prostitutes. Residents describe it as an open-air drug market that has devastated property values and scared off lenders needed for repairs. “It’s sad that the county wants to protect the homeless and support them but at the same time make law-abiding people homeless,” said Scott Barber, whose family has owned a unit at the Marylander for more than 40 years. “We feel trapped.” He added that selling the unit is impossible given the complex’s condition.

Residents warn the human cost could be severe. Condominium board member Beverly Habada said as many as 77 children could be displaced. “I counted them coming home from school on county school buses,” she said, adding that a school board member later asked whether the county should prepare for an influx of homeless students.

Prince George’s County, where the Marylander is located, is one of the most overwhelmingly Democratic counties in the country. Eighty-five percent of the vote went to Kamala Harris in 2024 down from the 89 percent that went to Biden in 2020, and county officials have vowed not to criminalize homelessness. It’s an acute example of the costs of unchecked chaos and criminality on the lives of everyday people.
