Harvard has said it’s in the middle of a campus-wide hiring freeze due to its funding fight with the Trump administration. It’s nonetheless making room in the budget for a “Lecturer in Latinx Studies” and a professor to teach podcasting, job listings reviewed by our Ira Stoll show.

The “Latinx Studies” position is housed in Harvard’s Committee on Ethnicity, Migration, Rights, which also houses the “Muslim American Studies Group” that is planning a Feb. 27 “Palestinian embroidery” workshop. The job title comes despite the fact that Hispanics overwhelmingly dislike the term “Latinx,” though demonstrating awareness of or responsiveness to public sentiment isn’t exactly Harvard’s strong suit. The Harvard Kennedy School, meanwhile, is seeking an “adjunct lecturer in public policy” whose “anticipated teaching needs” include “podcasting.” Neither position is especially lucrative: The Latinx studies job lists a salary range of $70,300 to $72,900, while the Harvard Kennedy School gig is part-time.

“It’s all mildly comical, but it’s also sad in a way for those cognizant of just how steep has been Harvard’s decline,” writes Stoll. “That point was underscored by, all of all things, the Supreme Court’s ruling this month in the tariff case. Bernard Bailyn’s work The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution, published in 1967, was quoted extensively by Justice Neil Gorsuch and by Justice Clarence Thomas. … What are the chances that whatever work is produced by the professor of podcasting or the lecturer of Latinx Studies will be of such enduring value?”
