Texas Democrat James Talarico says he’s running a “campaign based on love” and rejects the use of super PACs on moral grounds. At the same time, a billionaire-funded super PAC run by a close friend is boosting his Senate campaign, the Free Beacon‘s Andrew Kerr reports.

The Lone Star Rising PAC has spent nearly $3.7 million hammering Talarico’s primary opponent, left-wing firebrand Jasmine Crockett, with negative ads. The super PAC was formed by Talarico’s longtime friend Alexander Clark just one week before Talarico launched his Senate campaign. Federal campaign finance records show the PAC has received $500,000 from billionaire Reid Hoffman, who lives in California, along with money from other wealthy Democratic donors. Clark, in a now-deleted Facebook post, said he was proud to lead a super PAC to elect Talarico. “I will make no apologies for not unilaterally disarming until we can all play by the same set of rules,” he wrote. Another deleted post from Clark recounted a fundraiser he hosted for Talarico. “Thankful for your friendship,” Talarico commented.

That information was not included in a fawning New Yorker profile of Talarico, who suggested that, as a result of his Christian faith (Talarico is a Presbyterian seminarian who has said God is “nonbinary”), he would rather “lose” than win thanks to the work of a super PAC. Talarico has not denounced the super PAC or its negative ads.
